MOQ is not one number in woven jacquard sourcing. A program can have a minimum per pattern, a separate minimum per color, a dye-lot minimum and one-time development cost.
1. Pattern MOQ
Warp preparation, loom setup and pattern development create fixed costs. A small pattern quantity may be possible with a surcharge even when it is below the normal economic volume.
2. Color MOQ
Dyeing has its own minimum. A buyer may order enough total meters but split them into too many colors, creating small-lot charges.
3. Development and sample charges
Artwork conversion, trial weaving, lab dips and sample finishing can be one-time costs. Keep them visible instead of hiding them inside the recurring price.
4. Small-order weaving surcharge
When setup and changeover are spread across fewer meters, the unit weaving cost rises. A fixed surcharge can be more transparent than artificially increasing the fabric price.
5. Small-color dyeing surcharge
Dyehouse minimums are often independent of weaving MOQ. Ask whether the surcharge applies per color, per batch or per order.
6. Calculate the effective first-order price
Effective first-order unit price = total fabric value + all applicable development and small-order charges, divided by confirmed quantity
This is the correct number for comparing suppliers on a small initial program.
7. Separate repeat-order economics
If the pattern, yarn and finishing are already established, repeat orders may not carry the same development cost. Record both first-order and repeat-order price.
8. Use the reference price for the standard quantity
The Woven Jacquard Fabric Price Calculator gives a reference production price for the specification. Add project-specific MOQ and development charges separately to understand why a small order is above the benchmark.
9. Negotiate the structure of the surcharge
If you expect repeat business, ask whether the supplier can refund or amortize part of the development charge after a cumulative volume is reached. This is more rational than forcing the first small order to match bulk economics.
10. Do not hide MOQ from the final buyer
For wholesalers or sourcing agents, visible MOQ economics help protect margin. A low unit quote that ignores development cost can create a loss when the order is actually placed.
11. Compare like-for-like
Supplier A may have a higher unit price but no pattern surcharge; Supplier B may have a lower price with separate fees. Compare the total payable amount for the exact requested quantity.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typical jacquard MOQ?
There is no universal MOQ. It depends on warp preparation, pattern, loom route, dyeing minimum and supplier production model.
Why is there a separate color MOQ?
Dyeing batches have minimum economic sizes that can be independent of the weaving quantity.
Should development cost be included in price per meter?
It can be included or separated, but the buyer should see the total first-order cost and the repeat-order cost clearly.
Can small orders still be produced?
Often yes, but a surcharge may be needed to cover fixed setup and processing costs.
How can I compare two MOQ offers?
Calculate total payable cost for the same quantity and colors, then divide by shippable meters and compare the technical specification as well.
